Three-Dimensional Ultrasonic Assessment of Atherosclerotic Plaques

چکیده
Carotid atherosclerosis is the most common life-threatening neurological disease and therefore an accurate assessment of atheromatous plaques is clinically important. Several studies were developed to characterize plaques from two-dimensional (2D) ultrasound images that are associated with high risk of stroke. However, 2D characterization may not be very accurate because it depends on the selection of a representative ultrasound image of the plaque by an experimented physician. In this paper we present a novel approach for diagnosis based on 3D ultrasound, which only requires a common ultrasound equipment without need of any additional and expensive devices like spatial locators. The semi-automatic algorithm uses medical guidance to obtain a 3D representation of the carotid artery and plaque and automatically generates measures to characterize the plaque in terms of dimensions and texture. A useful analysis tool is provided to allow the identification of vulnerable foci within the plaque.

Atherosclerotic coronary artery disease (CAD) is the number one cause of death worldwide. The majority of CAD-induced deaths are due to the rupture of vulnerable plaques. Accurate assessment of plaques is crucial to optimize treatment and prevent death in patients with CAD. Current diagnostic techniques are often limited by either spatial resolution or penetration depth. Several studies have pr...
متن کاملQuantitative ultrasonic characterization of the nature of atherosclerotic plaques in human aorta.
To determine the feasibility of quantitative ultrasonic techniques to define the composition of atherosclerotic plaques, samples of freshly excised human aortas were sewn to a sample holder and immersed in a saline bath for ultrasonic interrogation. Integrated backscatter of a 2-microsecond portion of the backscattered radiofrequency signal was measured with a 10 MHz focused transducer. Integra...

Background and Objective: Ischemic heart disease (IHD) following atherosclerosis is the most common cause of cardiac deaths world wide. We aimed to investigate the pathologic features of atherosclerosis in non cardiac death cases to have an estimate of atherosclerosis prevalence in Mashad (North east of Iran). Patients and Methods : This descriptive (cross sectional) study was done, during ...
متن کاملReconstruction and quantification with three-dimensional intracoronary ultrasound. An update on techniques, challenges, and future directions.
Conventional two-dimensional intracoronary ultrasound enables the extent, distribution, and therapy of atherosclerotic plaques to be studied as it provides a unique tomographic visualization of both the vascular lumen and wall'". The most important limitation of two-dimensional intracoronary ultrasound in pre/poststudies is the matching of the target sites for serial measurement. This problem i...

Cervical Carotid Imaging With a ContinuousWave Doppler Flowmeter • A noninvasive technique for carotid arteriography using an ultrasonic directional Doppler flowmeter to image the carotid bifurcations is described. The technique uses a position sensing arm to hold the sharply focusing probe and translates the position of arterial flow onto an image storage screen. By multiple manual sweeps acro...
